What is a work history check?
A work history check verifies a candidate's stated employment history by contacting previous employers directly. It confirms: whether the candidate was employed at the stated company, the job title(s) held, start and end dates of employment, and any gaps in employment not accounted for.
This is distinct from a reference check — a work history check verifies the facts of employment, not a subjective assessment of performance.
3-year or 5-year?
Suitable for most pre-employment checks outside regulated finance — SMBs, hospitality, retail, and general business roles.
For FCA-regulated roles, SMCR Senior Manager and Certification Function hires, and any compliance or governance obligation. The FCA's SMCR guidance expects at least 5 years of employment history for SMF holders.
