A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) is a criminal record check carried out on a candidate before employment. The level of check required depends on the role and the level of responsibility or access involved. DBS is mandatory for many regulated roles and widely used as standard practice for customer-facing, supervisory, or positions of trust. The three levels ### Basic, Standard and Enhanced **Basic DBS** Unspent convictions only. Any employer for any role. Standard pre-employment check for most positions. **Standard DBS** Spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands. For roles within specific regulated sectors — financial services, licensed roles, certain healthcare support. **Enhanced DBS** Everything in Standard plus local police information. Can include barred list checks. For roles in regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults only. What it checks ## What the DBS check covers - ✓**Basic:** unspent convictions and conditional cautions - ✓**Standard:** spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings - ✓**Enhanced:** everything in Standard, plus any relevant information held by local police, plus barred list check where eligible Note: Requesting an Enhanced DBS for an ineligible role is unlawful. DBS certificates have no official expiry date, but most employers require a new check every 1–3 years or at start of employment. #### What if the candidate has a previous conviction?
