What is a credit history check?

A credit history check reviews a candidate's financial record over the past 5 years. It is used to assess financial responsibility, identify undisclosed financial difficulties, and identify risk for roles involving access to money, client assets, or financial systems.

It is a standard part of pre-employment screening for financial services firms (FCA hiring standard under SMCR), banks, asset managers, insurance firms, and any position with access to client funds, payroll, or significant financial authority.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CCJ automatically disqualify a candidate?

Not automatically — the hiring decision is yours. A single satisfied CCJ from several years ago is treated differently from multiple recent defaults. InfoVetted returns the data; your compliance or HR team makes the suitability assessment.

Can I run a credit check without the candidate knowing?

No. UK law (UK GDPR, Consumer Credit Act) requires candidate consent for employment-related credit checks. InfoVetted's invitation process collects this consent before the check runs.

Is a credit check appropriate for all roles?

No. You should only request a credit history check where there is a legitimate reason related to the role — typically financial responsibility or regulatory requirement.
